 The spirit of Taekwon-Do

Note metodologiche

In primo luogo quello culturale.

Introduction to the book

The man is in nature a fighter. Whole life is a struggle that he conducts against the limits of matter, its same limits and what obstruct his development and affirmation on the scene of this world. We fight for growing and emancipate us, for learning and find our proper space in society, fights against natural adversities, against our weaknesses, and especially against the innumerable obstacles that hinder our spiritual growth, today more arduous than ever.

«Militia est vita hominis super terram - Is there not an appointed time to man upon earth?» (cfr. Gb 7,1): biblical wisdom testifies this reality that the ascetics, mystical and athletes of every time have always clearly understand. Our epoch - a brief lax of time in the vastness of history - constitutes an exception to understanding this reality that belong to inner nature of man. It's a truth that our post-war and post-modern society has tried hypocritically to hide often with disastrous consequences in pedagogic and spiritual ground.

Whatever master of martial arts, and true educator, knows that the aggressiveness, together with other natural strengths, cannot be repressed, but finalized toward a superior object in a positive vision of life. The fruits of these last decades of permissivism in moral sphere and sterile moralism are known. This regressive process it's not casual and is a fruit of noxious cultural and mediatic strategies. A process worse with the crisis of authority flowed in refusal of the fatherly figure and of what it represents.

The man’s education, especially of the young, which is particularly devoted this book, it’s more complex and ticklish than can be imagined, must balance and integrate apparently irreducible aspects what, for example, the natural propensity to the competitiveness with the expectations of social life.

Only a sincere educator animated by a depth love for those young can indicate the best way toward this goal. A love characterized indeed from the respect for inner nature of person that it’s the object - but especially the protagonist - of this educational work. Only so it’s possible realize that synthesis between strength and tenderness, sensibility and decision, reason and compassion, analysis and synthesis, typical of an authentic and complete man.

The martial arts are an extraordinary educational instrument that can help a careful educator to obtain from a man, also the more difficult, the best of itself. Well afar to stimulate the violence they ask a masterpiece of discipline, humility, tenacity, courage and equilibrium, that constitute a solid base for any progress, in sport and in daily life, in the physical form and in spirituality.

Among the martial arts be due particular attention to the Taekwon-Do, for the elevated moral values that characterize the philosophy and for the effectiveness and elegance of his techniques. It’s a choice - without underestimating the goodness of other disciplines - that intends emphasize an aspect from many neglected: the sport it's not only strength and agility but also aesthetics, internal and external, what is true in particular way for the martial arts. Aesthetics also means ability of control, physical control, but also and particularly moral control. The aesthetics in martial arts realize an internal aesthetics that well expressed in impassibility of mature athlete, in his ability to become impenetrable to the fear, temptations and evil. Only sustaining this fight the man can offer the best of itself and achieve his fullness.

The principal goal of this book therefore it’s not to expose a martial art and her techniques, for this already are in commerce numerous books to which few could be added; the intent instead, after an historical-technique introduction to the art of Taekwon-Do, it’s that to emphasize philosophical principles and his inner spirituality. A spirituality that rises from the love for man and for reason, typical of this marvelous Korean discipline, that therefore conjugates deeply with Christian spirituality and western sensibility. To do great the man, every man, in the body, in mind and especially in spirit, it’s an objective for which it’s worth spend generously own life. It’s with this intent that I offer this book, with respect and affection, to every martial athlete and particularly to every taekwondoka.

Methodological notes

The object of these simple and brief notes, not common for what is given to see, in a text that treat sporting thematic, will  be double: give some contribution those that want to do analogous studies and launch a message for a greater cultural regard to the world of martial arts.

To develop an accurate research on the philosophy, ethics and spirituality of Taekwon-Do it'is not quite simple, there are in fact numerous obstacles to overcome. In first place cultural. The Korean culture, with her artistic and literary wealths, constitutes for many an unknown world where is difficult to venture, in first place for linguistic reasons. To understand deeply a martial art it's necessary understand the culture in which she was born and evolved; it’s necessary know the history, philosophy, language and style of life of a people, hard matter, especially when differences are so many.

A research implies indeed a great job of listening, reflection and interiorization. For how much original what transmits with a book it’s often a new way to propose cultural content in good part of others. Also this job it reveals particularly difficult in this case. The bibliography on the martial arts, and especially on Taekwon-Do, is relatively reduced and few diffused, particularly in Italian context. A lack that is due partly to the authors and partly to the publishing and librarian system.

Around the authors it’s necessary specify that in large majority of cases are texts of "technical" nature that don't consider the ethical-philosophical aspects (except some fundamental notes) and above all don't do it with a rigorous methodology; for this reason find the sources and discover new ways of investigation becomes arduous. It’s true also that the common reader that desires to learn something on a martial art doesn't usually particular interest to the methodological aspect, nevertheless this cause in long time a cultural impoverishment; a limit that the world of sport and martial arts greatly already suffers: but without culture and spirituality the sport extinguishes and dies.

If the reader will want accept him as a sort of cultural provocation and if this will push to start around itself a reflection in his gym, in his association, or also in a group of friends, the result - without doubt - will have been good. The auspice is that new and further contributions emerges for love of culture, of art and of sport, in a vital synergy that makes of every athlete a guardian of life and spirit (Gv 6,63).

Structure of the book

The book (592 pages, 14 x 21 cm., 86 photos and charts) consists of four principal parts. The first part contains an historical synthesis on development of the martial art in Korean context, a biographical note on life of the general Choe Hong-hui, founder of the modern Taekwon-Do, and a series of historical notations on achievement of the discipline in the Italian context.

In the second part are deepen the philosophical aspects and principles of the art underlining the immediate advantages and giving an explanation of the Korean flag (Taegeuk) in relationship to its philosophical meaning: an obligatory symbol, near the national flag, in every Do jang (school of Taekwon-Do). Numerous texts come directly from the work in 15 volumes of the general Choe, Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do, published for the first time in 1985 in the United States, translated in a free version and partially commented. It’s a fundamental work of which the reading heartily recommends, above all with regards for the first volume, rich of ethical and philosophical contents. Other relevant matters of this section are the disability in martial arts and pedagogic aspects in the evolutive age.

In the third part are primarily treated the thematic techniques of martial art, to start from the uniform (Dobok) to conclude with belts, patterns (Poomsae) and their philosophical meaning. The theory of the power, the techniques of self-defense and the relative ethical-moral aspect are moreover deepened. Follows the synthetic exposure of the WTF rules of the fight and patterns competitions and the rules of Do jang. Also in this case numerous texts, variedly commented, come from the Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do.

In the fourth part are deepened in particular way the philosophical aspects, the ethics and spirituality of art. An important part of the section concern the Confucian philosophy and its relationships with the Christianity. The positive aspects and limits of Confucian ethics in the texts of the founder of Taekwon-Do are deepened, bringing ample excerpt of its writings. Others thematic of relief in this section are related to the sport and human body in the Christian vision, the ethical use of strength, the “not physics” violence and the management of inwardness in the martial athlete.

Complete the book some brief biographical profiles in the world of Taekwon-Do, selected in relationship to the historical and ethical relief, in national and international context; a synthetic Italian-Korean glossary; two documents in appendix, the first of which offers the integral text of the letter Orationis formas, sent by the Vatican Congregation for the doctrine of the faith to all bishops of Catholic Church; a meaningful text of reference, rich of essential guidelines, for all those who desire to take advantage from the philosophies and oriental religions in his own spiritual life.
